The British military had their own ideas as far as a go anywhere tough 4x4 was concerned.

The first examples were built in 1943 with the code name of FV1800.

Because of a lack of time the military decided to go for completed vehicles rather than "knock down" kits.

In the spring of 1948 two examples of the 48 pre production range of Rover military vehicles were presented to the British Army for evaluation.

Subsequently these two 4x4 vehicles passed the rigourous testing given by the ministry and Rover were given an order to initially supply 46 further 4x4 together with an additional order for another 1878 vehicles.

The British Army also wanted an alternative engine, a 4 cylinder Rolls Royce B40 unit as was fitted to the Austin Champ, but reduced in capacity to 1600cc from 2.8 litres size of the Austin Champ.

The Rolls Royce engine offered a 50% increase in performane over the original Rover engine in the FV1800, but weighed considerably more.

Hudson Motors won the contract from the British MOD to fit thirty three Land Rover chassis with the Rolls Royce engine.  Since the early sixties, many military prototypes have been evaluated.  Some have been adopted by the military, but many have fallen by the wayside as military techniques change over time.

One notable example is the Land Rover Lightweight.  As helicopters of that era were unable to carry a payload greater than quarter of a ton, (later half a ton) a versatile lightened version of the short wheel base series Land Rover was offered to the British Armed Forces.

Designed to be dropped from a helicopter or aircraft with a parachute, damage was frequent and advancements in larger carrying capacity aircraft and helicopters soon put paid to this design. It was found that much larger standard vehicles could easily be transported giving greater versatility to the existing stock of MOD Land Rovers.
