New Land Rover Defender

2010 was believed to be the final year of production for the Land Rover Defender, but now it’s all “up in the air”, whilst Land Rover bosses weigh up all options.  Land Rover will soon be unable to produce the current Defender because of tougher and tougher EU regulations and with the present Defender model it simply will not be able to meet these new standards.

Apart from styling upgrades over the years, today's Defender looks more or less identical to it's original design, from an unbelievable 27 years ago.

In a nutshell, the main upgrades to the new Land Rover Defender are as follows..........

The new Defender has the fabulous Duratorq 2.4-litre common rail diesel engine for improved performance, reliability and economy.

This is one of the most modern engines designed and built by Ford. With a cast iron cylinder block, the cylinder head is alloy with 16 valves.  A new Garrett turbocharger featuring the latest variable geometry, ensures maximum engine efficiency throughout the rev range.

Attention has been given to the offroad ability of the Defender, ensuring adverse off road conditions cannot cause oil leaks or engine oil starvation resulting in mechanical failure.

A brand new Ford GFT MT-82 six speed gearbox featuring wider and better chosen ratios allows for improved on and off-road capabilities.

There is a redesigned, fresher, more modern looking dashboard, with improved ease of use and superior ventilation.

Better sound insulation.

The seats are more comfortable with full size forward facing third row seat on the 110 together with an option of 7 seats.

The Defender 90 is offered with 4 seats, all forward facing.

A much improved heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

The bonnet of the new Defender has changed shape, slightly and now has a sporty power bulge.   This allows for the larger 2.4 litre Ford “Duratorq”engine which is also taller than the original Td5 and Tdi engines.  The new Defender engine first saw service in the Ford Transit.

On the bulkhead or scuttle, the retractable air vents which first saw service on the series Land Rover, have disappeared. These were always favoured by the ardent Land Rover fan, especially on a hot day, when having these fully open meant that there was a lovely through flow of cooler air. The imprint of where the vents would have been, still remain on the bulkhead.

Since Ford has sold the Land Rover marque to the Indian company Tata Motors I am not sure as to how long Ford, who manufacture the engine and gearbox will continue supplying them for the Defender.   Maybe Tata have done or will do a deal with Ford to guarantee the supply until the sad final demise of the Land Rover Defender in 2010.

Specifications of the Ford Duratorq engine fitted in the Defender are as follows.......

4 Cylinder in line common rail turbo diesel direct injection engine.

16 Valves

Cubic capacity = 2401cc

Bore = 89.9 mm

Stroke = 94.6mm

Compression Ratio = 1 - 17.5

Max Power @ 3500 rpm = 90 KW

Max Torque @ 2000rpm = 360 Nm
