Land Rover ex MOD and Military.

|
Land Rover have been producing military specification vehicles for many years.
Starting with the series Land Rovers it was a natural progression to later use the 90, 110 followed by the Defender.
Whilst Land Rover has customers for their military Land Rover versions from all round the world, the British Ministry of Defence has always been and still remains Land Rover’s biggest military customer.
Below are a few pictures and information about some of the ex MOD and military Land Rovers which I’ve owned over the years.

1991 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 2.5 diesel hardtop - Ex British MOD. The smaller and lighter size of the 90 made it a favourite of the British Army. Still capable of carrying large heavy loads, with its smaller wheelbase this allowed it to get to places other similar vehicles were unable to go. When equipped with a NATO towing hook as many of these were, a large trailer was easily hauled. Many of these hardtop 90 were kitted out with communication equipment, known as FFR or fully fitted radio.

1986 LAND ROVER 110 SOFT TOP EX BRITISH MOD Released from service in 2002. The British Army used a mix of petrol and diesel Land Rovers. the 2.5 litre normally aspirated diesel and the 3.5 litre petrol V8. More down to available supply from Land Rover as to what they had, but having both fuel types made the vehicles flexible for use in countries with a ready supply of either variant of fuel.

1978 Land Rover 88 Lightweight 2.25 diesel LHD soft top - Ex Dutch military. These were really an aborted design, intended for advance use being rapidly transported to far flung war torn destinations under a helicopter. These stripped out series Land Rovers based on the 88 inch had a carrying capacity of 1/2 ton. With advances in larger helicopter design such as with the Chinook, it meant that heavier vehicles, such as a 90 or 110, which were cheaper to build, could easily be transported. The Lightweight was no longer needed and was eventually withdrawn from service.

1986 Land Rover 90 2.5 normally aspirated diesel - Ex British MOD (released 1999) well stuck in mud. The 2.5 liter diesel engine offered in the British MOD Land Rovers of the 1980s were long lived units. Never particularily fast, they gave reliable service with minimum of attention. They were also excellent performers off road, particularily in muddy conditions. Later British armed service Land Rovers such as the “Wolf” Defenders used the excellent 300Tdi diesel engine.

1986 LAND ROVER 90 SOFT TOP EX BRITISH MOD - With time and a bit of money you can restore any Land Rover. This one was a well used and battered ex MOD example released by the MOD in 1999, which although roadworthy was well in need of TLC.
